HPA leads and delivers innovative, high-quality and cost-effective programmes to help with the following areas:


HPA provides information, advice, research and resources to help prevent and reduce alcohol-related harm and inspire New Zealanders to make better decisions about drinking alcohol.

Health education resources

HPA looks after HealthEd (www.healthed.govt.nz), an online catalogue of over 500 consumer-focused and preventative health resources covering 44 topic areas in a range of formats. These free resources support them make informed health decisions, stay well and lead better lives.


HPA supports the Ministry of Health’s immunisation programme that protects New Zealanders from preventable diseases. Our marketing and communication activtiies promote high rates of immunisation.

Mental health

HPA supports communities and individuals to recognise, address and reduce the impact of depression and anxiety. Our aspiration is for a fully inclusive New Zealand society that respects the contribution of people with mental illness.

Minimising gambling harm

HPA would like all New Zealanders to experience less gambling related harm by increasing awareness of the early indicators of harmful gambling and help seeking options that are available.

Nutrition and physical activity

HPA supports New Zealand families to choose and prepare healthy foods and inspires families to enjoy being active together.

Skin cancer prevention

HPA’s goal is to reduce the incidence and impact of skin cancer. We work to encourage SunSmart behaviours in our community. These are to Slip into a wide brimmed hat, Slop on broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, Slap on a wide brimmed hat, and Wrap on close fitting sunglasses.

Tobacco control

HPA is working towards a Smokefree New Zealand by 2025. Our work contributes to this goal through our mass media campaigns, community projects, information, and resources. So that more people are smokefree and protected from the harm of tobacco.

Workplace wellbeing

HPA has developed a hub to bring together New Zealand examples, practical ideas, tools and resources for people who are leading wellbeing action in New Zealand workplaces.
