How we’re buying – purchasing patterns at venues selling alcohol

17 Jul 2019

‘How we’re buying’ describes purchasing patterns from credit-cards and EFT-POS cards at venues licensed to sell alcohol across New Zealand.

The type of venue examined is limited to off-licence bottle stores and on-licence premises (bars, pubs and taverns) between 2009 and mid-2015. Timing of purchasing varies by type of licensed premise, day of the week and age groups of card holder.

For example, spending at off-licences tends to peak around 5-6pm each day, whereas on-licence spending tends to peak around 7pm for most days and midnight for Saturday. Younger age cohorts show different spending patterns to older cohorts for type of premise and time of day.
