Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that do not break down easily, and stay in the environment. They can enter food and be absorbed in the tissue of animals and people. This can result in health problems.
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants is a multilateral environmental agreement. It aims to protect human health and the environment by banning the production and use of some of the most toxic chemicals.
The Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Stockholm Convention) Amendment Act 2003 gives effect to the requirements of the Stockholm Convention in Aotearoa New Zealand.
